Innovative Cryogenic Electric Flight (ICEFlight)

What is the goal of the project?

ICEFlight is an initiative exploring new technologies supporting fuel cell aircraft development aimed at achieving hydrogen-powered flight. For this, the project team investigates the use of liquid hydrogen (LH2) both as a fuel and a cooling source to enhance next generation aircraft powertrain performance through innovative electrical technologies, superconductivity and hyperconductivity. At the end of the project, the Dutch supply chain will be positioned to provide the next generation zero emission aircraft with two technologies: a cryogenic cooling system and a cryogenic electrical network. This will enhance the Dutch global competitiveness in advanced aerospace technologies, paving the way for future developments in sustainable aviation.

How did the idea originate?

To ensure future generations can enjoy flying as much as we do, aircraft manufacturers positioned themselves at the forefront of exploring innovative uses of LH2 in aviation. Airbus and its supply chain therefore explore multiple technology pathways and aircraft configurations. Simultaneously, GKN Aerospace is exploring hyperconductive technologies. As both these solutions require a similar cryogenic cooling system, Airbus and GKN Aerospace decided to share these efforts, and for this, collaborate with the Dutch ecosystem.

How does the project contribute to sustainable aviation?

ICEFlight focuses on creating a specialized cryogenic cooling and electrical distribution system while developing the skills, competences, technologies and products within the Netherlands for the next generation of aircrafts. These are all crucial elements that will make the future of flying possible. In addition to the technological innovations to be explored in this project, it also includes establishing world-class testing facilities in the Netherlands, led by the Royal NLR to ensure the reliability and validate the performance of these cryogenic systems.

What are the next steps for the project?

  • Launch the preparation of the cryogenic equipment, assessing analytical, experimental critical functions and feasibility by the end of 2025;
  • Prepare communication around the project, including sharing updates during industry meetings and conventions.
